What is Fourpeaks Solitaire?

Fourpeaks Solitaire is a fast-paced tableau-clearing solitaire game that works almost exactly like Tripeaks—but instead of three peaks, the layout contains four. This creates a wider tableau and slightly more opportunities for branching chains. Despite the expanded layout, the gameplay remains simple, smooth, and highly satisfying. Each turn is a small puzzle: deciding which card to remove first, which hidden card to reveal next, and how to build the longest possible sequence.

How to Play Fourpeaks Solitaire

Objective

The goal of Fourpeaks Solitaire is to clear all cards from the tableau by moving them to the waste pile. You remove cards by selecting any available tableau card that is exactly one rank higher or lower than the top card of the waste pile. Suits and colors do not matter.

Setup

Fourpeaks Solitaire is played with a standard 52-card deck and uses a tableau shaped like four overlapping peaks. The layout is made up of:

  • Tableau: 27 cards arranged to form four peaks. Most of the upper cards are face-down, and the shared bottom row of 10 cards is face-up. Removing the blocking cards in the lower rows reveals the face-down cards above them.
  • Stock (draw pile): The remaining cards are placed face-down. When no moves are available, you draw the next card from the stock to the waste.
  • Waste: The top card of the waste pile determines which tableau cards you can play next. After removing a tableau card, it becomes the new waste top.

Rules

  • Rank-based matching: You may play a tableau card that is one rank higher or lower than the current waste card.
  • First Move Flexibility: Because the waste pile starts empty, the first card you play from the tableau can be any exposed card. It does not need to match anything by rank. After the first card is placed, the usual “one higher or one lower” rule applies.
  • Face-up & unblocked cards only: A tableau card must be both face-up and not covered by another card to be playable.
  • Single stock pass: You normally get only one pass through the stock pile. When the stock runs out, no additional draws are available.
  • No tableau building: You cannot move or rearrange tableau cards—only remove them.
  • Empty spaces remain empty: When a card is removed, nothing fills its position. The tableau stays as originally dealt.

Strategies for Fourpeaks Solitaire

Fourpeaks Solitaire rewards careful planning and smart sequencing. These strategies can help improve your odds of clearing all four peaks:

  • Prioritize revealing new cards: When choosing between playable cards, the best option is usually the one that uncovers more face-down cards.
  • Use the Free First Move Wisely: Since the waste begins empty, your first move can be any exposed tableau card. Choose one that either starts a strong chain or reveals an important hidden card. Don’t waste the first move on something that leads nowhere.
  • Use the stock only when needed: Every draw reduces your ability to make long sequences. Explore all possible plays before drawing from the stock.
  • Create long runs: The heart of the game is chaining moves in both directions—for example, 8 → 9 → 8 → 7 → 6.
  • Balance the four peaks: Try not to clear just one peak while leaving the others untouched. Keeping multiple peaks open increases your number of playable cards and reduces dead ends.
  • Pause after revealing a card: Whenever a moved card uncovers a new one, check whether the newly revealed card can extend your sequence.
  • Think ahead when the stock gets low: The final few stock cards often determine victory. Plan your last moves with care.
  • Use hints or undo: They help you explore safer routes and avoid wasting valuable stock draws.
