What is Hole in One Solitaire?

Hole in One Solitaire is a fast-paced tableau-clearing solitaire game built around a unique 31-card layout with a single face-down “hole” card. Inspired by Tripeaks-style mechanics, it uses simple rules, smooth gameplay, and rewarding chain-building choices. Each move is a small puzzle: deciding which card to uncover, when to draw from the stock, and how to set up long sequences that clear entire rows.

How to Play Hole in One Solitaire

Objective

The goal of Hole in One Solitaire is to clear all cards from the tableau by moving them to the waste pile. You remove cards by selecting any available tableau card that is exactly one rank higher or lower than the top card of the waste pile. Suits and colors do not matter.

Setup

Hole in One Solitaire is played with a standard 52-card deck and features a special tableau containing 31 cards arranged in four rows, with only one card face-down—the “hole in one.” The layout consists of:

  • Tableau: 31 cards dealt in four rows. The top row holds a single face-down card, and the following three rows contain 10 face-up cards each. Removing blocking cards reveals the face-down card when its supporting cards are cleared.
  • Stock (draw pile): The remaining cards are placed face-down. When no moves are available, you draw the next card from the stock to the waste.
  • Waste: The top card of the waste pile determines which tableau cards you can play next. After removing a tableau card, it becomes the new waste top.

Rules

  • Rank-based matching: You may play a tableau card that is one rank higher or lower than the current waste card.
  • First Move Flexibility: Because the waste pile starts empty, the first card you play from the tableau can be any exposed card. It does not need to be one rank higher or lower than anything. After the first card is placed, normal “one higher or one lower” rules apply.
  • Face-up & unblocked cards only: A tableau card must be both face-up and not covered by another card to be playable.
  • Single stock pass: You normally get only one pass through the stock pile. When the stock runs out, no additional draws are available.
  • No tableau building: You cannot move or rearrange tableau cards—only remove them.
  • Empty spaces remain empty: When a card is removed, nothing fills its position. The structure stays as dealt.

Strategies for Hole in One Solitaire

Hole in One Solitaire rewards planning ahead and choosing the most revealing moves. These strategies can help improve your win rate:

  • Prioritize revealing new cards: Removing cards that uncover the single face-down “hole” card should be a priority, as it often unlocks crucial mid-game flexibility.
  • Use the Free First Move Wisely: Since the waste starts empty, your first play can be any exposed card. Choose a card that leads to a chain or opens up access to more useful ranks.
  • Use the stock only when needed: Each stock draw reduces your chance to build long sequences. Check all available plays before drawing.
  • Create long runs: Try to chain cards both up and down in rank—for example, 8 → 7 → 8 → 9.
  • Work evenly across the tableau: Avoid clearing only one side or row. Progressing multiple areas keeps your options open.
  • Pause after revealing a card: When a move exposes a new card—especially the single hidden card—check whether it extends your sequence before continuing.
  • Plan carefully near the end of the stock: The final stock cards often determine whether you can finish the tableau. Think ahead during the last few draws.
  • Use hints or undo: These tools help experiment with sequences and avoid wasting stock draws.
