What is Weave Solitaire?
Weave Solitaire is a lesser-known tableau-clearing solitaire game closely related to Tripeaks. It uses the same “one rank higher or lower” mechanic but features a much denser and wider tableau made of 39 cards. The layout looks like interlaced strands, which is where the name “Weave” comes from—rows of cards overlapping in alternating directions, almost like woven fabric. Because more cards begin face-down and only four are available at the start, Weave is more challenging and requires more long-term planning than Tripeaks.
How to Play Weave Solitaire
Objective
The goal of Weave Solitaire is to clear all cards from the tableau by moving them to the waste pile. You remove cards by selecting any available tableau card that is exactly one rank higher or lower than the top card of the waste pile. Suits and colors do not matter.
Setup
Weave Solitaire uses a standard 52-card deck and deals a distinctive 39-card tableau arranged in a “woven” pattern. The rows overlap in alternating directions, producing a tight interlaced structure. The setup includes:
- Tableau: 39 cards arranged in a wide, zig-zagging woven shape. Most cards are face-down at the start, and only four cards in the middle row are initially face-up. Removing cards uncovers the overlapping cards above them.
- Stock (draw pile): The remaining 13 cards form the stock. With fewer stock cards than usual, running out is more common, and each draw matters more.
- Waste: Played cards are placed on the waste pile. The top waste card determines which tableau cards you may play next.
Rules
- Rank-based matching: You can remove a tableau card that is one rank higher or lower than the current waste card.
- First Move Flexibility: Because the waste begins empty, the first card you play may be any of the four exposed cards. After this initial play, normal rank-matching rules apply.
- Face-up & unblocked cards only: A card must be face-up and not covered by another card to be playable.
- Single stock pass: You typically get only one pass through the stock pile. Once all 13 stock cards are drawn, no additional cards can be turned over.
- No tableau building: Tableau cards cannot be moved or rearranged—only removed.
- Empty spaces stay empty: Removing a card never shifts other cards. The woven shape remains fixed throughout the game.
Strategies for Weave Solitaire
Weave Solitaire emphasizes uncovering the tightly packed hidden cards and managing your very limited stock. These strategies will help improve your success rate:
- Focus on early reveals: Only four cards are face-up at the start, so prioritize moves that uncover additional cards as fast as possible.
- Use the Free First Move Wisely: Since the first card can be any of the four exposed ones, choose the one that either reveals the most cards or begins a long chain of plays.
- Protect your tiny stock: With just 13 stock cards, each draw is valuable. Make sure no playable moves remain before drawing.
- Form long chains: Just like Tripeaks, sequences such as 8 → 9 → 8 → 7 → 6 help conserve stock and unlock deeper cards.
- Break the weave from multiple sides: Don’t attack only one area. Spreading your clearing helps reveal overlapping cards that depend on multiple blockers.
- Reevaluate after every reveal: Each uncovered card may open a new chain or a better route—pause to check before continuing.
- Think ahead near the end: Because the stock is so short, the final few plays often decide the win. Try to leave yourself multiple rank options for the last stock cards.
- Use hints or undo when available: These can help avoid wasteful early draws and find longer sequences.
